The City of Culver city retired twelve (12) 1981 and 1983 model year diesel-fueled transit buses and replaced them with new, 40-foot, low-floor compressed natural gas buses. The vehicles are manufactured by New Flyer and are equipped with the Detroit Diesel Series 50G natural gas engine. This engine is certified by the California Air Resources Board at the 2.0 g/bhp-hr optional NOx standard. The total number of CNG buses currently operated by Culver City is 26. Each CNG bus operates approximately 48,000 miles annually. The anticipated life of each vehicle is 12 years.

This project is effective in reducing oxide of nitrogen (NOx) emissions. As the NOx emissions are transported downwind, they react with sunlight and hydrocarbons to produce ozone. Thus, regions within the South Coast AQMD in addition to the City of Culver City benefit from this project.
The following are the anticipated emission reductions realized by the Culver City CNG bus purchase project: Annual NOx Reduction per Bus: 951 lbs. Annual NOx Reductions for 12 Buses: 11,418 lbs. Lifetime NOx Reduction for 12 Buses: 137,016 lbs.
The Final Report includes an executive summary, summary and conclusions, detailed project discussion, and issues identified and resolved.
