The Commuter Channel Project developed a subscriber-based system to provide customized, real-time traffic information directly to the user's e-mail account or computer desktop. The service is provided free of charge. The objective is to provide real-time traffic information that allows subscribers to more efficiently plan their commute, resulting in less congestion, improved traffic flow, and a corresponding improvement in air quality. Subscribers will know of impediments to their freeway commute in advance, providing the ability to manage their trip by delaying their departure or altering their route. The Commuter Channel system was implemented within a six month period, three months ahead of schedule. The official launch date was September, 2000. The service is branded and marketed as "Traffic Bee". The service can be accessed via the internet at www.trafficbee.com. The system currently sends over 58,000 e-mails per month to subscribers.

SCAG has estimated the reduction in vehicle trips and vehicle miles traveled that result from the implementation of the Commuter Channel. SCAG estimates the following annual emission reductions based on the current user database: Reactive Organic Gases (ROG): 1,113 pounds annually Carbon Monoxide (CO/7): 1,149 Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx): 1,152 Particulate Matter (PM10): 343
The Final Report includes an Abstract, Summary and Conclusions, Project Scope, Purpose, and Background, a discussion of the System Architecture, the Subscription process, Traffic Bee software, a discussion of unanticipated problems, and a quantification of emission reductions resulting from project implementation.
