Los Angeles World Airports purchased 22 Gillig Phantom 35-foot, 40-passenger transit buses equipped with Cummins L10-280G liquefied natural gas engines. The engines are certified by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to the optional low-NOx emissions standards; these engines produce approximately 50% less NOx emissions as compared to a comparable diesel engine. The shuttle buses are used to transport airline passengers at LAX between the Central Terminal and the primary remote parking lots. Each bus has an expected life of ten (10) years. All 22 shuttle buses were operating in regular service as of May 2001. Currently, the actual vehicle mileage is exceeding the original mileage projections. The estimate annual mileage per shuttle is 39,800 miles. Globe Ground (formally Hudson General) contracts with Los Angeles World Airports to operate and maintain the LNG shuttles.

Although the actual NOx reductions are realized in proximity to LAX, the entire South Coast Air District benefits from this reduction in ozone precursor emissions.
This project will reduce approximately 8.3 tons of NOx emissions per year. This equates to over 80 tons of NOX over the anticipated life of the vehicles.
In addition to a description of the project, the Final Report includes a vehicle monthly mileage log, a table of vehicle operating costs, and an analysis of vehicle emissions reductions.
