Project Background

The contractor purchased a 22-passenger electric shuttle bus to serve two purposes in the Los Angeles downtown area: 1) pick up employees at the Metrolink and Union train station and transport them to any one of the three Bank of America buildings during morning and evening commute hours; and 2) to shuttle Bank of America employees among four Bank of America buildings during the normal workday servicing the business needs of the bank's various departments. The Department of Water and Power constructed a charging facility at 717 South Maple Street in the Bank of America's garage. Battery packs are charged at the garage during off-peak hours on a daily basis. Fully charged spare packs are available for battery swap outs. Storage of the packs and the required maintenance are performed by the garage staff. Maintenance includes weekly watering and voltage testing.

Project Implementation

The buildings serviced are within a small, heavily congested area of downtown Los Angeles. The shuttle operates from the Metrolink Station and the Union Station and on city streets during the work day. The commuters who are riding the trains and Metrolink, leaving their vehicles at outlying stations, contribute to emission reductions. The areas serviced by the mass transit systems covers most of the counties in Southern California.

Project Results Description

The vehicle emissions for one electric bus operating 100 miles per day in stop and go traffic are as follows: Non-Methane Organic Gases,(NMOG) 0.50 lbs per day; Carbon Monoxide,(CO) 5.36 lbs per day; Nitrous Oxide,(NOx) 1.23 lbs per day; and Toxics, 0.25 per day.
