The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) purchased 186 40-foot liquefied natural gas (LNG) urban transit buses in lieu of diesel-fueled buses. OCTA ordered the buses from North American Bus Industries in 1999 and 2000 and delivery and acceptance was completed in 2002. All 186 buses are equipped with the Detroit Diesel Series 50G engine, certified at the ARB optional NOx standard of 2.0 g/bhp-hr. The 186 buses replace diesel buses initially deployed in 1980 and 1988. The LNG buses are assigned to two operating bases located in Garden Grove and Anaheim. They are assigned to all bus routes that operate from these two bases. The buses have a LNG capacity of approximately 200 gallons; this enables the vehicles to operate the entire shift without requiring mid-day refueling.

The significant NOx reduction realized by this project benefits all regions of the South Coast AQMD through the reduction of ozone-forming precursor emissions.
The 186 LNG buses result in the following annual emissions reductions: Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx): 167,974 pounds
The Final Report includes an abstract, summary and conclusions, recommendations, and quantification of emission reductions.
