The LACMTA replaced 223 existing diesel transit buses with new, low emission CNG buses. The buses are manufactured by New Flyer of America and are equipped with the Detroit Diesel Series 50 engine, which at the time of purchase was certified by CARB at 2.5 g/bhp-hr. This engine produces 37.5% less NOx than the comparable diesel engine. The vehicles have a useful life of twelve years. As a result of working closely with the bus and engine manufacturers, MTA was able to successfully deploy all buses and meet the project's anticipated air quality goals. All 223 buses were operating in revenue service as of August 2000, and each bus is expected to accrue approximately 41,200 miles annually. The 223 buses were deployed throughout Los Angeles County.
