The Tustin Police Department expanded its Bicycle Unit from three bicycles to eleven. As a result of funding provided by the MSRC, the Tustin Police Department was able to procure an additional eight (8) bicycles. The bicycles are outfitted for law enforcement operations, and are equipped with emergency lights and siren as well as additional storage for necessary police equipment. The bicycles meet the California Vehicle Code specifications for emergency vehicles. In addition to the bicycles, the MSRC funding also purchased safety equipment and uniforms specifically designed for bicycle patrol officers. To maintain the bicycles, specialty equipment was purchased. Two members of the bicycle unit attended a bike repair school; the city is now able to fully maintain their equipment on site with minimal need for outside bicycle repair shops. The members of the bicycle patrol unit have experienced some very positive benefits from their new assignments, particularly in the area of physical fitness. This project also generated significant clean air benefits for the community.
