Long Beach Transit contracted with the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG)to purchase SCAG's TranStar transit information database, which contains route and schedule information for more than 40 transit providers and 650 transit and rail routes in the Southern California area. The installation of the TranStar System and maintenance of route information is an on-going joint effort between the staff of Long Beach Transit and SCAG. The TranStar System allows the user to input travel needs, such as origin, destination, and desired time of departure and/or arrival. TranStar then identifies the optimum transit routes and provides information on station locations, fares, and transfers. An additional feature of the TranStar System is the ability to specify route criteria, such as "lease expensive", "shortest travel time", or "fewest transfers". The immediate benefit of the TranStar System is that it aids the scheduling operators when providing transit patrons with route information, and helps individuals accessing the Long Beach Transit web site to coordinate their travel with other public transportation providers. TranStar eliminates the need for the rider to make numerous calls when transferring to other systems outside the Long Beach Transit service area.

Transit patrons in Long Beach directly benefit from this project; however, the emissions reductions realized from increased transit usage in lieu of single occupant automobiles benefits the entire South Coast region.
The projected annual emissions reductions attributable to the TranStar System are as follows: Reactive Organic Gases (ROG): 2,792 pounds per year Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx): 3,781 pounds per year Particulate Matter (PM10): 1,433 pounds per year
In addition to a thorough description of the project, The final report includes statistical data regarding patronage of the TranStar System.
