The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD)has implemented bicycle patrols at several stations within the region. The MSRC funding allowed LASD to expand existing bicycle patrols in the City of Industry, Lawndale/Lennox, Marina Del Rey, and San Dimas service areas, totaling approximately 282 square miles. Bicycle patrols offer two significant benefits to law enforcement agencies. The first is the benefits gained through community-oriented policing. Bicycles allow greater interaction between the Deputies and the residents of the service area, improving community relations. In addition, bicycles afford the Deputies increased mobility to patrol areas such as subgarages, walking paths, marinas and docks, etc. Of equal importance are the environmental benefits associated with the use of zero-emission bicycles in lieu of conventional patrol vehicles. During the course of this project, at least 11,630 automobile miles were eliminated. This is in addition to the elimination of countless hours of motor vehicle idling emissions.

The areas served by the Bicycle Patrols directly benefited from this project; however, the reductions in ozone precursor emissions benefit the entire SCAQMD region.
The projected annual emissions reduction attributable to this project are as follows: Reactive Organic Gases (ROG): 600 pounds per year Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx): 392 pounds per year Particulate Matter (PM10): 69 pounds per year
The final report includes details of the project implementation, including conclusions and recommendations, as well as monthly logs documenting bicycle usage.
