The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) purchased and deployed 46 liquified natural gas (LNG) transit buses. The buses are 40-foot, low-floor vehicles equipped with the Detroit Diesel Series 50G LNG engine. This engine is certified at the California Air Resources Board Optional NOx standard of 2.0 g/bhp-hr. In addition to purchasing the alternative fuel buses, OCTA also constructed an LNG refueling facility at their Anaheim Base facility. The refueling station has two dispenser lanes and can fuel the buses at a rate of 50-60 gallons per minute. At total of 116 LNG buses currently use this refueling station.

Ozone formation due to NOx emissions from diesel vehicles is a regional health concern. The use of low-emission buses in Orange County helps allieviate ozone throughout the South Coast region.
Emission reductions realized by the use of low-emission alternative fuel buses in lieu of diesel buses are as follows: Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx): 44.5 tons reduced annually.
The final report includes a project Abstract, detailed project description, recommendations, and an estimate of daily emission reductions.
