Riverside Transit Agency purchased 57 compressed natural gas (CNG) buses as part of their ongoing efforts to transition their entire transit bus fleet to clean burning CNG. The 57 buses were purchased from North American Bus Industries (NABI). Forty seven of the vehicles replaced existing diesel-fueled buses; the remaining ten vehicles are transit service expansion buses. The first bus was delivered in November, 2001, and the final bus delivered in December, 2002. Upon delivery, each bus was subjected to inspection and testing prior to deployment into revenue service. The buses will operate along routes in the cities of Riverside, Moreno Valley, Hemet, Temecula, and some unincorporated areas of Western Riverside County. The buses are low-floor, 40-foot vehicles equipped with the Detroit Diesel Series 50G CNG engine. This engine is certified by the California Air Resources Board at the Optional NOx standard of 2.0 g/bhp-hr. The vehicles have an anticipated service line of 12 years; each bus is expected to accrue approximately 55,000 miles annually.

While the County of Riverside is the direct beneficary of the low-emission buses, the Eastern portion of Riverside County also benefits from the reduction in ozone precursor emissions.
The Riverside Transit Agency bus purchase project will yield the following emission reductions: Annual NOx reduction per bus: 1,406 pounds (0.70 tons per bus per year) Total annual NOx reduction (57 buses): 80,170 pounds (40 tons annually)
The Final Report includes: Project Summary and Conclusions; Recommendations; Project Scope and Background; Project Discussion; Emission Benefits Calculations; In addition, the Final Report includes an Appendix detailing each vehicle's fuel consumption.
