City of Los Angeles DPW Purchase of 42 LNG Refuse Collection Vehicles

Contract Number

MSRC Award
$945,000.00
Project Background

The City of Los Angeles, Department of Public Works, purchased 42 new solid waste collection vehicles. The vehicles use the Peterbilt 320 chassis and the Amrep solid waste collection body and are equipped with the Caterpillar C-10, 10.3 liter pilot ignition liquefied natural gas (LNG) engine. This engine operates primarily on liquefied natural gas, but initiates the natural gas fuel ignition using a diesel fuel "pilot" charge. In essence, the diesel pilot acts as a liquid spark plug to ignite the primary natural gas fuel charge. The LNG fuel system is supplied by Chart Idustries. In addition to the purchase of alternative fuel vehicles, the City of Los Angeles constructed a LNG refueling station. The MSRC contributed $100,000 as co-funding towards the LNG station construction.
