The City of Colton was retiring four conventional gasoline fueled vehicles that had exceeded their useful life. The vehicles included a 1989 Ford F-250 pick up truck, two Ford F-150 pick up trucks, and a 1984 GMC 1500 pick up truck. It was determined by the City that the replacement of these vehicles with alternative fuel vehicles would meet the needs of the City and reduce air pollution emissions within the South Coast Air Basin.

The City of Colton solicited competitive bids and awarded the bid to the lowest responsible bidder.
The objective of the project was to purchase four medium-duty compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles. Vehicle types included two Ford F-150 pick up trucks equipped with 5.4L, 225 HP dedicated CNG engines, one Ford E-350 van equipped with a 5.4L, 175 HP dedicated CNG engine, and a Chevy Silverado one-ton Stakebed truck with a dedicated CNG engine. The vehicles will be refueled at a CNG station in the City's corporate yard. The pick ups will be used by the Parks and Recreation and Streets Departments. The van will be used by the Streets Department.
All four vehicles have been placed into service. Based on the experience gained through the implementation of the project, the City has provided recommendations for other agencies pursuing similar purchases: Establish firm delivery parameters that meet MSRC requirements during the development of bid documents, prior to bid advertisement, ensure the desired vehicle is manufactured in a model with a CARB certified engine, be sure to budget for costs to train employees on maintenance and repair of CNG vehicles, and ensure a method of refueling is established for both daily use and emergencies.
