Bid specifications were prepared detailing the CNG chassis, advanced low emission control compliance (Cummins ISL G) requirement, and vehicle performance specification. A purchase order was created and the vehicle was delivered in February 2009. The vehicle was placed into service on March 9, 2009 and no issues were encountered.
The objective of this project was to remove a diesel fueled solid waste collection vehicle and replace it with a vehicle equipped with an advanced low emission engine fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG). Life expectancy on this new truck is approximately ten (10) years.
The truck removed from service was powered by a 1984 Detroit Diesel 6-71 TAC diesel fueled engine. The replacement vehicle is equipped with the Cummins Westport ISL G dedicated natural gas engine. This engine is currently the cleanest heavy-duty engine commercially available; it is certified at 0.1 g/bhp-hr and thereby already meets the 2010 NOx standard of 0.2 g/bhp-hr.
The CNG refuse truck is currently operating in daily collection service. No issues have been encountered to date with respect to vehicle performance.
