In an effort to reduce vehicle emissions and improve air quality in the South Coast Air District, Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) has made a commitment to use alternative fuel vehicles in LAWA operations whenever feasible. This is especially true as it pertains to heavy-duty vehicles; LAWA has demonstrated their commitment to replace older, diesel heavy-duty equipment with low emission alternative fuel engines. LAWA currently operates over 650 alternative fuel vehicles.

The new CNG buses are manufactured by North American Bus Industries (NABI). Twenty (20) 35-foot low floor and nine 42-foot buses were purchased. Each bus is equipped with the Cummins ISL G 8.9 liter CNG engine. This engine is certified by the California Air Resources Board at 0.1 g/bhp-hr and is the lowest emitting heavy-duty internal combustion engine commercially available for urban transit buses. The new buses have been integrated into LAWA's fleet of LAX Parking shuttle and LAX Flyaway shuttle services. The buses are refueled at the existing LAWA LNG/CNG refueling station located at 7350 World Way West as well as a publicly accessible commercial station located at 104th Street and Aviation Boulevard.
The purpose of this project was to replace 29 older diesel-fuel buses with new, low emission compressed natural gas (CNG) buses.
The annual mileage accrued by each bus is estimated to be approximately 69,900 miles. This equates to approximately 12,958 gallons of diesel fuel displaced by each bus on an annual basis, or over 375,000 gallons of diesel fuel displaced annually.
The new CNG buses have been successully integrated into LAWA shuttle service. All buses were placed into service as of November 17, 2009. No significant technical issues have been encountered.
