Councilman Ron Roberts Retires from the MSRC

Ron Roberts has recently retired from public office and stepped down as a longstanding member of the MSRC. Roberts, who joined the MSRC as an alternate in 1999 and served as the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) representative until December 2014, was well-suited to tackle regional transportation challenges. He believed that the make-up of the MSRC, with strong local government representation from across the region, gave the MSRC a good perspective to tackle mobile source pollution problems. Upon first joining the MSRC, Roberts noted, "the progress from 20 years ago is very real. I always lived in the San Gabriel Valley - backed up against the mountains where the smog is the worst - and it was hard to breathe. It was a real blessing when we moved to Temecula," said Roberts, a four-time Mayor and Council Member in the city since 1992. "Then everyone followed. Temecula has grown from 25,000 people to almost 100,000 people, and this area has to tackle air pollution problems, too - it's truly a region-wide challenge." Roberts provided invaluable expertise and direction to the development and implementation of countless MSRC Work Programs that cumulatively invested tens of millions of dollars into clean transportation initiatives throughout Southern California. Prior to his elected public service, Roberts was a California Highway Patrol Sergeant. In addition to his CHP and long record of local government service in Temecula, he was the Chairman of the Southern California Regional Rail Authority - better known as Metrolink, Past President of SCAG, past Chairman of the Riverside County Transportation Commission as well as being active for many years in the National League of Cities' committees dealing with transportation-related issues. Some of Roberts' highest priorities as an MSRC member included addressing dirty diesel school buses, refuse trucks and the trucks used by independent haulers serving the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach as well as heavy duty construction vehicles. The MSRC thanks Ron Roberts for his tireless service to its mission and to the people of Southern California and wishes him a long and productive retirement.
