Latest Air Resources Board Meeting Moves Mobile Source Strategies Forward

At the October 22 California Air Resources Board meeting, the Board heard two items of interest designed to reduce mobile source emissions. The new draft Mobile Source Strategy is designed to simultaneously meet air quality standards, achieve GHG emission reduction targets, reduce petroleum consumption, and decrease health risk from transportation emissions over the next 15 years. The strategy highlights the technologies, fuels and energy sources that will need to be deployed to achieve these goals, focusing on on-road vehicles, off-road equipment, and the freight system. The actions outlined in the strategy will support multiple planning efforts including State Implementation Plans, the California Sustainable Freight Strategy, the Scoping Plan Update, and the Short Lived Climate Pollutants Plan. Another item the Board heard was the advanced Clean Cars Program Mid-Term Review. Staff presented to the Board an update on on-going work related to the Advanced Clean Cars mid-term review, including updates on work with Federal agencies, current zero emission vehicle sales, and research contracts related to consumers. Staff, along with invited experts that included Wade Crowfoot, Governor Brown's Deputy Cabinet Secretary, Tyson Eckerle, Governor Brown's Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Project Manager, and Chris Kehoe, President of the PEV Collaborative, updated the Board on efforts to enable zero emission vehicle markets. The update covered fueling infrastructure, fleet purchases, multi-state and national partnerships, and other relevant topics. ARB continues to take steps in helping Californians to reduce emissions from mobile sources.
