The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) operates the nation's largest fleet of compressed natural gas (CNG) transit buses. Metro purchased a total of 370 40-foot, low-floor transit buses under contract to NABI, which also included priced options for the purchase of additional buses at pre-negotiated prices. The 75 CNG buses described herein are were exercised under contract Option #1.

The 75 new CNG transit buses were purchased from North American Bus Industries under an option exercised by the Metro Board in July 2004. The buses are similar to those purchased by Metro in 2002, with the addition of the newest technology Cummins natural gas engines.
Metro purchased 75 NABI low-floor CNG buses equipped with engines certified to the California Air Resources Board "Optional NOx" low emission standard. The addition of the new CNG buses will allow Metro to retire 75 older, diesel-fueled transit buses.
Metro reports that the buses are among the most reliable in their fleet. Improved engine components and "lessons learned" on prior bus orders were reflected in the manufacture of the new vehicles. Minor issues were addressed with NABI using contractual and warranty provisions.
All 75 buses have been accepted and are operating in revenue service.
