Foothill Transit Agency currently operates 232 compressed natural gas (CNG) urban transit buses, 170 at its Pomona Operation and Maintenance Facility and 62 at its Arcadia/Irwindale location. An additional 82 diesel buses located in Arcadia/Irwindale will be replaced by CNG buses within the next five years. Foothill Transit operates CNG refueling stations at both bus facilities, including a public access station at the Pomona Facility. The Pomona facility is now 100% CNG; no diesel fuel infrastructure remains at this facility.

Foothill Transit selected the North American Bus Industries 40-foot urban transit bus equipped with the Detroit Diesel Series 50G natrual gas engine for purchase. This urban transit bus engine is certified by the California Air Resources Board at a NOx plus non-methane hydrocarbon rating of 1.2 g/bhp-hr, which is approximately one-half the emissions of a comparable hevy-duty diesel engine. Twenty-two of the buses were deployed at the Arcadia/Irwindale facility; 53 buses were assigned to the Pomona facility. Foothill Transit also constructed a new CNG refueling station at its Arcadia facility to accomodate the new CNG buses.
The objective of this project was to continue Foothill Transit's transition to CNG buses through: a) the purchase of 75 new CNG transit buses; b)construction of a CNG refueling station; c) maintenance garage expansion and station methane detection system upgrades at the Irwindale/Arcadia facility; and d) fleet mechanic training for maintenance of CNG buses.
All buses are currently operating in revenue service, and the Arcadia CNG refueling station is fully operational. No technical issues have been identified by Foothill Transit.
All 75 CNG buses have been received, undergone acceptance testing, and have been placed into revenue service. Construction of the Arcadia CNG station is complete and operational. In addition, the training of fleet mechanics, installation of methane detection, and maintenance facility modifications are all complete.
