The City of Ontario replaced eight (8) on-road heavy-duty refuse vehicles will new compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles. The vehicles replaced included: One (1) 1985 White WX64 roll-off truck; Two (2) 1988/'90 White WX64 automated truck; Five (5) 1988-'90 White WX84 front loaders trucks. These vehicles range from 51,000 gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) to 57 GVWR. The City replaced these older diesel vehicle with eight (8) new, original equipment manufacturer (OEM) dedicated CNG refuse trucks. The city purchased five (5) new front loaders, two (2) automated side loaders, and one (1) roll-off truck. The chassis manufacturers include Freightliner and Volvo; all vehicles are equipped with the Cummins 8.3G Plus dedicated CNG engine. This engine is certified by the California Air Resources Board at the Optional NOx standard of 2.5 g/bhp-hr. The vehicles operate a minimum of 40 hours per week in both residential and commercial refuse collection. The vehicles travel an average of 60 miles daily for residential pickup, and up to 110 miles per day for roll-off pickup throughout the city. The City of Ontario is very experienced in the operation of clean fuel vehicles. Currently, the City operates 47 CNG vehicles, ranging from light-duty pickup trucks to heavy-duty vehicles. 80% of the City's refuse collection vehicles operate on CNG, with 100% of their "first line" refuse trucks CNG powered.

While the residents of the City of Ontario directly benefit from this project, the reduction in ozone precursor emissions benefits a larger portion of the South Coast AQMD.
The estimated emissions reductions attributable to this project are as follows: Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx): 2.97 tons per year.
The Final Report includes an Abstract, Vehicle Data, Summary and Conclusions, Recommendations, Emission Benefits Summary, and Color photographs of the new CNG vehicles.
