Contractor purchased seven Alternative Fuel Vehicles; four 1998 Honda Civic GXs, which run on compressed natural gas (CNG), two 1998 Toyota RAV4 electric vehicles (EVs), and one 1998 Ford F-250, a CNG vehicle. The four Hondas were assigned to Public Works, City Engineering Division. The two Toyotas were assigned to Code Enforcement and to the General Pool. The restricted range of the EVs works well in these areas as the cars remain in the City with easy access to the charging station. The Ford truck was assigned to a Public Works foreman. A special utility rack was added to offset the reduced bed of the truck taken up by the fuel tanks. Contractor also installed a Fuelmaker charging unit which has both a fast fill and a time fill capability.

The City of Manhattan Beach is operating the seven vehicles within city limits, but the clean air advantages are not restricted to that community. The prevailing winds blow from west to east, so inland areas will benefit as well.
Annual reductions - 525 pounds. Total emission reductions - 2135 pounds.
