Contractor constructed a freight intermodal facility. This facility will substitute rail transport for the current truck transport of baled hay commodities. The hay will be shipped in containers to ships for export to Asia.

The truck route from El Centro to the Port of Long Beach covers a large section of Southern California. The rail shipping has eliminated a large amount of emissions adversely affecting a route traversing from El Centro, Indio, Palm Springs, Beaumont, Riverside, Corona, Norwalk, and southward toward the harbors of Long Beach and Los Angeles. The prevailing winds along that route are from west to east. The communities east of the route will benefit from the emission reduction.
Rail transport produces an average of 3 times fewer air pollutant emissions per ton-mile of freight moved, in comparison with trucking. The intermodal facility will decrease the number of truck trips from 2,000 in year 1 to 15,000 in year 5. The elimination estimates are: Truck miles eliminated, 730,000; hydrocarbons eliminated, 1.67 tons; carbon monoxide eliminated, 5.2 tons; nitrogen oxide eliminated, 7.24 tons; and particulate matter eliminated, .86 tons.
