The Sheriff procured two ZAP electric-assist bicycles, two Raleigh F-500 police bicycles, and two Trek Police Patrol bicycles, fully outfitted for law enforcement use. The electric assist bikes allow extended patrols as well as reducing response time in hilly terrain.

To date, the VIPER program has been introduced to communities in Orange County in a variety of venues which combine police usage with community awareness programs. The Sheriff's Department is currently conducting an internal survey to determine ways to expand the program into other areas which will enhance community awareness of the bicycle program. The emission reduction coupled with the high level of safety for the communities the bicycle program services make it a valuable feature for all users.
Monthly emission reductions are rated at 33.5 pounds with a projected annual emissions reduction of 402 pounds. The monthly reductions are Reactive Organic Gases, 12.3 pounds per month; Oxides of Nitrogen, 8.3 pounds per month; Carbon Monoxide (CO), 11.3 pounds, and Particulate Matter, 1.6 pounds.
