Contractor investigated an advanced exhaust after-treatment technology that has the potential to significantly reduce the NOx and particulate emissions of diesel engines, without significantly penalizing engine performance, efficiency, or durability. The project examined the use of Plasma Technology to achieve reductions in NOx and particulate matter. See Contract No. 97005 for follow-on research of this technology.

Any area in which this technology is utilized will be benefited.
The technology developed has the potential for on-road medium and heavy-duty diesel emissions reduction in excess of 70% and could provide similar benefits for stationary and off-highway diesel engines. This emissions reduction capability will allow a 1998 diesel engine to meet potential 2004 EPA and CARB regulations for NOx and particulate emissions.
Study results on NO/NOx reduction, temperature activity, particulate removal, energy requirement, power supply, durability and system lifetime, effect of additives and commercial potential of plasma technology.
