The City of Riverside purchased two (2) compressed natural gas (CNG) street sweepers and three CNG utility boom trucks. The City obtained a "piggyback" offer from Haaker Equipment from an advertised competitive bid from the City of Los Angeles Department of Airports for the two street sweeper vehicles, and a piggyback offer from Pacific Utility Equipment Company from a competitive bid from the City of Azusa for two of the three utility boom trucks. The third utility boom truck was purchased on a State Contract pricing schedule from Altec Industries, Inc. The new CNG street sweepers replaced 1989 Mobil ABD-2 diesel-powered street sweepers. The new vehicles have a life expectancy of 12 years, and accumulate approximately 12,000 miles annually. The annual diesel fuel displacement is estimated to be approximately 4,451 gallons per street sweeper. The new utility boom trucks have an anticipated life expectancy of 12 years, and will displace approximately 2,298 gallons of diesel fuel per year per vehicle.
