Project Implementation

This project commenced in May 2001. Omnitrans took advantage of the options for additional vehicles included in Tacoma Washington-based Pierce Transit's contract with New Flyer of America. This allowed Omnitrans to significantly shorten the procurement process. On March 17, 2004, the pre-production meeting with New Flyer was held for the manufacture of the three (3) buses. As a result of this meeting minor changes were made to the vehicle configuration; however, no changes were made that effect the vehicles' emissions. During the manufacturing process, Omnitrans contracted with Transit Resource Center to perform on-line inspections of the vehicles.

Project Objectives

This project continues Omnitrans' commitment to convert their bus fleet to 100% compressed natural gas (CNG). Omnitrans purchased three (3) new CNG-powered 40-foot transit buses. These buses utilize Cummins 8.3 liter low-emission CNG engines certified by CARB to the Optional low-NOx standard.

Project Results Description

To date, the three CNG buses have accrued over 152,000 total miles and have displaced over 39,000 gallons of diesel fuel. No significant issues have been encountered. The three older diesel buses retired as a result of this project were sold at auction in accordance with Omnitrans' policy.
