The City of Anaheim is committed to the goal of cleaner air and a healthier environment. To this end, the City desired to purchase three heavy-duty compressed natural gas (CNG) powered vehicles including two aerial bucket trucks for the utility department and one bookmobile for the library. However, upon the review of the specifications for the aerial bucket trucks it was determined that two other vehicles would be more suitable for CNG use.

The City of Anaheim prepared and issued a bid packages for each vehicle. Awards were made to the lowest responsible bidder.
The objective of the project was to purchase three (3) CNG heavy-duty vehicles including: one heavy-duty aerial tree trimming truck built on a Freightliner FL70 chassis with a Cummins 8.3 G+ engine, one Vactor sewer truck with a Cummins 8.3G+ CNG engine, and a Matthews bookmobile with a John Deere 8.1L CNG engine.
The tree-trimmer truck and Vactor sewer truck were placed into service in 2005. The Bookmobile was placed into service in February 2006. The operators of all three vehicles are happy with the performance of the vehicles. The vehicles perform well and are reliable. Barriers encountered in the project include the long production time for the CNG power plants, incremental costs of CNG vehicles, and training. The Final Report for this project includes a summary and conclusions as well as emissions benefits.
