The City of Claremont supports the goal of clean air and a healthier environment through the reduction of air pollution from motor vehicles. To this end, the City determined it would replace three of its aging waste collection trucks with alternative fuel vehicles and construct the infrastructure needed to fuel the vehicles.

The City of Claremont solicited bids for the construction of the CNG fueling station and awarded the bid to KPRS Construction Services. The bid included the ALLSUP Corporation bid specifications as desired by the City. Bids were also solicited for replacement of one diesel fueled commercial and two diesel-fueled residential refuse collection trucks. The City awarded the bids for the new CNG trucks to Carmenita Truck Center of Santa Fe Springs.
The objective of the project was to construct a compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station at the City Corporate Yard and purchase three CNG collection trucks to replace diesel-fuel trucks that had reached the end of their useful life. Each new CNG truck has a life expectancy of 12 years and is anticipated to run 2,100 hour per year.
The CNG fueling station was complete in January 2005. In June 2005, the City took delivery of the first CNG collection truck and the final truck was delivered in August 2005. Staff has experienced challenges with the CNG fuel station including excessive oil consumption, a failed motor compressor, and compatibility issues with the billing system. These issues have resulted in a significant amount of downtime in the operation of the station. Summary and conclusions on this project can be found in the Final Report.
