The City of Rancho Mirage has a long standing policy dating back to 1996 that alternative fuel vehicles will be purchased, whenever possible, when older vehicles are replaced.

The City entered into a purchase agreement with Wondries Fleet Group of Alhambra, California for the purchase of the vehicles.
The objective of this project was to purchase four (4) Ford F-150 pick-up trucks with compressed natural gas (CNG) engines and one Chevrolet Silverado dedicated CNG truck with an extended cab and four wheel drive. Each vehicle has a life expectancy of eight years and estimated annual mileage of 10,000 miles. Four of the five vehicles will replace older, gasoline powered fleet vehicles and one will be purchased for a newly created position.
All trucks have been delivered and are in service as of March 20, 2006. The project was originally scheduled to be completed by November 22, 2004. The original scope called for the purchase of a CNG powered dump truck, however, the City found it difficult to locate the appropriate vehicle. A contract amendment deleted the dump truck and added the purchase of two more pick-up trucks. The City noted that is increasingly more difficult to locate dedicated CNG vehicles. All vehicles purchased for the City have come from Wondries Fleet Group. Wondries purchased a block of 2004 Ford CNG pick-ups when Ford announced they would discontinue production of the model. Although the smaller truck works well for some applications, the City finds that a heavier truck would be more useful for certain field personnel. A summary and conclusions can be found in the Final Report for this project.
