The City piggybacked on an order with the City of Santa Monica to maximize cost efficiency.
The objective of this project was to purchase a Crane Carrier roll-off vehicle equipped with a John Deere 8.1L, 190 hp dedicated CNG engine. The Crane Carrier will replace two older gasoline powered vehicles which will become obsolete with the addition of the Crane Carrier. The two replaced vehicles are a 1972 Dodge 2-ton dump truck and a 1979 International 2.5-ton water truck with average miles per gallon of 2.68 and 1.65, respectively.
The vehicle arrived at the City of Hawthorne on March 29, 2006 and was placed into service. The City plans to continue to utilize MSRC funding to improve its vehicle fleet. It also found that cooperating with another city to purchase very beneficial economically and a good way to exchange ideas between cities.
