Per City purchasing policies, a Request for Quotation for purchase and installation of the particulate traps was sent to ten (10)vendors. Four vendors responded. The City awarded the agreement to Ironman Parts and Services. The installation of the traps on the eight vehicles was completed over two days.
The City's original application called for installing CARB particulate traps on five new refuse trucks in the City's fleet. After receipt of the new trucks, the City discovered that there were no approved traps available on the market for the trucks. A revised list of eight (8) used vehicles was submitted and approved by the MSRC to be used in place of the original vehicles.
There have been no mechanical problems or engine performance problems detected due to the installation of the particulate traps. Obtaining low-sulfur diesel fuels from vendors have not been a problem. Opacimeter testing on the vehicles shows them running cleaner. Mechanics have reported that the installed devices produce a noticeable reduction in exhaust emissions.
Installation of the particulate traps was successfully completed on January 9, 2007.
