The City of San Bernardino is committed to the goal of cleaner air and a healthier environment by reducing air pollution from motor vehicles. To this end, the City determined it would replace three of its aging gasoline-powered field service vehicles and one of its 1995 first generation compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles with new alternative fuel vehicles. All four vehicles had reached the end of their useful service life.

The City of San Bernardino entered into a negotiated purchase with Wondries Fleet Group of Alhambra, California for the purchase of the vehicles.
The objective of this project was to purchase three (3) Ford F-150 CNG pick up trucks and one (1) Chevrolet 2500 ton CNG fueled pick up truck. Each vehicle has a life expectancy of eight years and estimated annual mileage of 10,000 miles.
The four CNG vehicles are in service. Initially, the City encountered problems locating CNG refueling stations convenient to the City yard. However, the City of San Bernardino will have its own CNG-LNG station in operation by mid-2006. Once the Citys CNG-LNG station is on line, City staff recommends that CNG-LNG vehicles be considered for all new vehicle purchases. The City is also training its employees on safe CNG vehicle repair and is investigating what changes need to be made to its repair shop for CNG vehicle repair.
