Bid specifications were prepared detailing CNG chassis, emission control compliance, and vehicle performance for the three (3) refuse haulers, the street sweeper, and one of the aerial trucks. One aerial truck was purchased as a gasoline powered vehicle and the City decided not to pursue the purchase of the pickup truck or the second aerial truck. Funds regarding these vehicles was returned to the MSRC. Purchase orders for the refuse haulers and street sweeper were created and these vehicles were delivered in June and July of 2007. All four vehicles are currently in-service.
The objective of this project was to remove 6 diesel fueled trucks and 1 gasoline powered pickup truck and replaces them with clean fueled compressed natural gas fueled trucks. Life expectancy on the heavy-duty trucks is approximately 10 years and 7 years on the pickup truck.
Refuse haulers removed from service were powered by Volvo VE and Cummins 8.3 diesel fueled engines. The street sweeper was a dual engine unit. The chassis was powered with a Cummins L-10 engine and a secondary Perkins engine powered the sweeper. By replacing these four (4) trucks, the City of Whittier is reducing NOx emissions by 1.2 tons annually.
