The City of Pomona had two electric vehicles used by the Parks and Recreation Department but no other types of alternative fuel vehicles were in the City fleet. On May 2, 2005, the City adopted a resolution to purchase its first compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicle.

The City used its competitive bid process to purchase the vehicle.
The objective of this project was to purchase a GMC Sierra CNG pick up truck to replace a high mileage 1989 vehicle. The new Sierra will be utilized by the Equipment Maintenance Division of the Citys Utility Services Department. The City estimates the vehicle will be used approximately 10,500 miles annually. This vehicle will allow the City evaluate the use of alternative fueled vehicles in anticipation of purchasing similar vehicles in the future.
The vehicle was placed into service on January 27, 2006. Initially, the purchase of the vehicle presented some challenges with fueling. The proposed fueling site at Foothill Transit was unavailable for public use and did not have a compatible fuel pump receptacle. However, an agreement was reached to use the Foothill facility and a receptacle was placed on the City vehicle to match the pump. The AQMDs fueling station will be used as a back up site. The City of Pomona is actively pursuing funds to construct its own station. More details can be found in the Final Report.
