Omnitrans is a transit provider for San Bernardino County
The total purchase cost of the thirty new transit buses was $13,138,253. Of this amount, the MSRC contributed $30,000 per bus in Clean Transportation Funding. The balance of the purchase cost was paid by the Federal Transit Administration and Omnitrans.
Omnitrans issues a Request for Proposals in 2007 and selected the preferred vendor on February 6, 2008. Following a series of pre-production meetings, construction of the first bus unit commenced on November 18, 2008. Omnitrans maintains an onsite inspection team at the bus manufacturing facility. Omnitrans selected the Cummins ISL G engine for the new CNG buses - this is certified at or below 0.13 g/bhp-hr for oxides of nitrogen emissions (NOx) and is currently the lowest NOx emitting heavy-duty transit bus engine commercially available.
The purpose of this project was to procure thirty (30) new, low-emission transit buses fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG).
All buses are currently operating successfully in daily revenue service.
At this time, all 30 CNG buses are operating in revenue service. Omnitrans did experience technical issues during initial vehicle operation; this included multiple engine oil cooler failures, engine ignition control module failures, and turbocharger waste-gate failures. In all cases, the issues were resolved with Cummins Engine Company under an extended warranty agreement.
