Thermoelectric Air-Conditioning System

Contract Number

Project Background

Contractor refined advanced thermoelectric air conditioning and heating systems for low and zero-emission vehicles. The devices are small solid-state materials that turn either hot or cold, depending on the polarity of the current applied. They provide a system for air conditioning and heating that is inexpensive, maintenance free, uses no CFCs, and can be engineered for low energy use necessary in electric and other alternative fueled cars. The heating and cooling is applied through vehicle seats for maximum efficiency. Contractor designed and installed systems in electric and conventional vehicles. Contractor conducted tests to quantify the effectiveness of the system, determine reductions in fuel consumption, and obtain information on conumer acceptance.

Project Implementation

The benefits of this project are not location specific.

Project Results Description

Emissions reductions in LEVs will total 13,750 pounds (Non-Methane Organic Gas) NMOG by 2003. ZEVs emission reductions totalled 34,400 pounds in 1997 contingent upon sales of thermoelectric seats. The average annual emissions NMOG per car while operating conventional air conditioning is 3.44 pounds. Average annual emissions NMOG per electric vehicle is 0 pounds.

Project Status Description

Field testing data, information on the four prototype heated and cooled seats for low and zero-emission vehicles, information on the four prototype heated and cooled seats for electric vehicles, and information on two instrument panel spot cooler prototypes using thermoelectric devices in LEVs and ZEVs.
