The County Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County (LACSD)have always endeavored to mitigate emissions resulting from wastewater treatment and landfill operations while maintaining state-of-the-art operations. LACSD has implemented an alternative fuel vehicle program since 1993 in which landfill gas is processed into usable compressed natural gas (CNG)for vehicle use. LACSD's current fleet of natural gas vehicles range from heavy-duty waste transfer trucks to light-duty passenger cars and vans for its rideshare program. As LACSD continues to pursue integration of alternative fuel vehicles into its fleet, additional refueling capacity is needed to accomodate the growing demand.

Clean Energy Corporation was selected as the contractor for the project. Notice to proceed was released in September 2005 and ground breaking commenced during April 2006. The station is designed with two GreenField skid mounted compressors rated at 300 standard cubic feet per minute each at a supplied gas pressure of 116 pounds per square inch. The station also has 30,000 standard cubic feet of natural gas storage.
The station offers two dual hose dispensers with minimum fill rate of four gallons of gasoline equivalent (gge)per minute. Dispensers are rated at both 3,000 and 3,600 psi fill pressure. Universal card readers offer electronic point of sale access to other fleet or public station users.
LACSD constructed a new CNG refueling station located at the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant in the City of Carson. This location was selected to best serve LACSD's new fleet of CNG vehicles as well as other local fleets and public users.
During the first six months of operation, the station dispensed over 39,000 gge of CNG, including 4,023 to Palos Verdes Transit, 1,731 to the City of Carson, and approximately 30,000 to credit card customers.
The station construction was complete as of October 2006. The station is accessible to any user 24 hours per day/seven days per week. In addition to LACSD, other frequent users of the station include the City of Carson, Palos Verdes Transit, Clean Street, as well as the general public.
