Contractor initially intended to co-fund the deployment of 12 or more heavy-duty Class 8 trucks fueled by liquefied natural gas (LNG). The availability of low-emission LNG engines that could deliver the power and torque necessary for Class 8 (e.g., semi tractor-trailers) applications was extremely limited. Concerns were also raised about the availability of LNG fuel. The non-availability of the trucks and the concern over fuel led several of the originally targeted fleets to withdraw from the program. Contractor re-scoped the project to provide one truck, a Kenworth T800 semi-tractor powered by an LNG-fueled Cummins L10-300G engine. The re-scoped project included demonstration and emissions testing operated by Ace Hardware under a lease agreement with Ryder Transportation Services. The vehicle was placed in service in Irwindale, California in March of 1997.
